Amazing scope for the money. I'm definitely looking at buying several more to outfit my other hunting rifles.

I love this optic. The magnification range and reticle are unmatched for a versatility. Is it a 1-6. no. Is it a 4.5x27 no. It does the job of both very well. I shot dots in F class long before it became the norm. Superimposing one object over another is superior to crosshairs. A lot of people think the big dot is too big on this optic. I love the big dot. In the real world with field positions your rest is not perfect. There is some wobble. If your wobbling in a 1mil radius a .01 mil dot is a liability. Your mind/body trys to use the precision and it hurts efficiency. The Christmas tree reticle dots are much smaller. For load development/accuracy testing I switch to those. The reticle works close. It works far within reason. THe scopes weight is reasonable. Im old. We used to shoot at 1000 with 10x scopes. On steel this optic works to 800 or so quite well. If I had one complaint its that the optic is not bumped to at least midas tac quality. The glass is very nice here at helos btr. No one ever condemned athlon for its glass. I hate poor glass nowadays. This glass doesnt hurt my eyes. The optics track for me. I have a bunch. Id prefer the configuration in a midas tac or Aeres package with the better turrets and top notch glass. I m very glad this optic is produced just the way it is. Spoiled I guess. I sometimes look at my much more expensive LOW Japanese optics now. I love how they are crafted. I trust them. The turrets feel like a NASA instrument. This optic doesnt instill the same feeling in me mechanically but I cant get away from its unique versatility. Honestly the glass is just as good if not better. When I get done playing with the awesome mechanical devices they go back in the safe and this optic gets put in the rings. When I used to shoot F class I would be at the top of the bottom third every time. In every shooting sport there are limits. To get past certain points takes time and money. I spend both of those how I like. They are finite things. I like my skill level. I practice for field conditions and enjoy that. I show up at various disciplines and do well for the resources and time I spend. I enjoy it very much. IMO this scope has no peer for versatility in field positions. Maybe there is something better outside of my pay grade. Dont know dont care.

Illumination dial is non functional. This is Athlon's response: "I was sent your email by my team. I know that illumination knob is very stiff and it is designed that way so unfortunately there is no way to adjust it. I know over time the detents inside will wear down and it will be smoother and not as difficult." How can it wear down if I can't adjust it?

Bought the athlon 2-12mil, and oh boy, this review is 100% spot on!!!!!
For the quality, value, ranges its capable of, and the eyebox, which im slapping myself across the face on the "how did they accomplish this"
This scope will take you out past 800 yards!
    I humbly thank you!
On my 308 build, im going to get the ares 3-18 with ultra spec glass!
That scope is another grand slam!!!
    Thank you!
    Sincerely,
    Mark

I already had a Trijican 2-10x36mm on an 18" barrel AR, but I needed another scope for a new hunting rifle and I didn't want tp spend a $1000. on another scope.

So I gave the 2-12x42mm a try, and it blew me away. Talk about punching way above it's price class. It's the most well balanced scope I've ever used, and I've used a few in over 50 years of shooting.
